Animal sightings.

The number of unidentifiable birds today was as high as it's ever been. It went beyond "some kind of seagull" and "maybe a catbird" into "little brown bird" - the whole general category. The rain last night shifted into haze and mist through the morning, and damp, heavy air by the time I went out for my bike ride in the early afternoon. I didn't much mind: it kept people out of the park and turned the space over for the birds.

They might've been warblers, they might've been kinglets, they might've been shy sparrow species that don't much like dogs. To that, I sympathize. Whatever they were, they were singing, so I feel confident in calling them songbirds.

There was one I got a good glimpse of, though. Small, gray, long tail, and something I immediately clocked as a speed fin.

I kept on with my ride, marveling at the changing leaves and the beautifully familiar and nostalgic scent of them all wet on the ground. I got to the usual pigeon spot, and they came down to greet me, eager and waiting. And I had some extra seed with me, plus some hand sanitizer, so I figured now was a good time - and got a few eating out of my hands, climbing on my arm, and a few of them even deigned to let my hands on them as they ate. Easily, and by far, the highlight of the day.

(A close second was getting a genuine compliment on an email, because that's where we are these days.)
