Starting to change.

I've needed a new rug to go under my bed for the better part of a year. It's been a struggle to find something the right size with a good texture that's nice to look at. I've looked at a bunch of places and not been able to find anything that worked, and today I went with my dad to a housing goods store to look at some rugs that seemed like they might worked based on the internet listings. None of them worked. I asked, "Are any of these monochromatic?"

The saleswoman and my dad said that there's some with -

"That doesn't answer my question. Are any of these monochromatic?"

Harsh, yes, but I wanted my question answered. And no, for the record.

We went to look today because the new bed's due to come soon, and it'd be good to have the rug around to put under the bed when the movers are here, just to make things easier. I'd hoped to have something. There wasn't anything. Nothing I liked the look of, the size of, the feel of.

Then the saleswoman said we could get some carpeting cut down to size.

Plain carpet.

Simple color.

In the exact measurements provided, not a few inches more by a few inches less than what I asked for.

I ended up having to sit down on a pile of rugs and cry a bit, because it was exactly what I'd wanted and been looking for and nobody at any point ever suggested it as an option. With the amount of carpeting I'd be buying, it'd be a comparable amount of money for the mid-level rugs I'd thought about. We could've finished this months ago, but I had no idea. I could've had exactly what I wanted ready to go, but I didn't know it was even possible.

It hit pretty hard.

I don't know if the saleswoman handed me and my dad off to the carpet salesman just to get rid of me, but I wouldn't be all that surprised. He showed the two of us the samples, and then stepped back for us to examine them. They were set out like posters in a college bookstore, items on racks to be flipped through, with a big piece to showcase the texture on one side and small pieces showing off all available colors on the other.

I knew I needed to do something to keep from getting overwhelmed. Even narrowing it down by excluding the stuff that was an automatic texture rejection, there was a lot. So I decided on a strategy that would at least cheer me up somewhat.

I went by the names of the carpets.

Because when the salesman took me and my dad over to the carpet samples, I was still in a low funk, still having trouble with things, struggling with - hey, this one's named Seurat.

I ended up thinking either something from the Seurat or Monterey design in a green or blue-green color, but if I've waited this long and it's going to be three to five weeks to cut, trim, hem, and ship the carpet anyway, I might as well head back and touch all the samples again. Just to be sure.

There's something to be said for being able to touch and feel a sample of whatever you plan to buy, especially something as large as a rug to be under one's bed. Glad you were able to get what you sought!
