Tuesday night.

It's the forty-second birthday of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is reason enough to make a post.

Just as much a reason is I've found this new little part of a small park that I've started to fold into my bike rides - it's the tiniest bit north of where I usually go that takes me to the top of a small hill. Except the hill's only small when I come at it going north. There's a steep descent right at the end, so when I turn around and head south, not only is there this wonderfully sharp hill I can coast down for a lovely burst of speed, just before that, there's a moment at the apex when I have this lovely view of the George Washington Bridge through the trees. I imagine in winter, when the leaves are down, the sight's going to be even more impressive.

Also, strongly flavored mint chewing gum is good at helping manage low-level anxiety attacks. I knew I'd bought some for a good reason.

Strictly speaking HHGTTG is older than that - it was a radio series back in either late 1977 or early 1978 - I know where I was living when I listened to it for the first time, and I left there to get married in the summer of '78. It was a mind-blowing experience to listen to it every week for the first time.

March and April 1978, according to Wikipedia. I first heard it (or at least, half of it) in the summer of 1979, when I was looking for something interesting to listen to on the radio. I got to BBC just in time for a discussion of fjords. :)

Thanks - that makes sense. I was teaching in a small Yorkshire town, miles from any friends and with no TV. (Internet? Hahaha) - It was very definitely appointment radio.

Fjords do give a continent a nice Baroque look. Award-winning. ;-)
