Her royal majesty.

I know how it sounds when it starts, last night I had this terribly vivid dream, but what's this space for if not that kind of thing, last night I had this terribly vivid dream about a transgender Queen of Scotland that had me waking up disappointed it wasn't a book I could read or movie I could watch about her, because what few details I woke up remembering were tantalizing enough I wanted to go back to sleep to see if I could find more.

Her name was Charlotte, and she didn't transition until middle age, and there was this glory to her when she started being fitted for dresses. She'd begun her reign as a king, and didn't step down as a monarch when she transitioned. Just got a title change and stayed in charge of Scotland. Queen Charlotte of Scotland.

It was vivid enough I looked to see if there were any novels yet written about trans royalty. No such luck. While there was a real Queen Charlotte, again, not quite what I wanted to read about when I woke up. And here I am, distrusting myself to even contemplate figuring out the rest of the story - she sat with Elizabeth II at some event, I think she may have fathered children - because it's so not my story to tell.

I hope someone else does, someday.

Alyssa Cole's A Prince on Paper has a non-binary royal. They are a minorish character but the author does tend to take that type of character and make them one of the major characters in a later romance.

There was a possibly trans, possibly intersex Baronet in Scotland, in the 20th century! He helped save my dad's life when my dad was born prematurely - it was a family story that the local army doctor, along with my grandfather (who was a military pharmacist), managed to acquire penicillin for my grandmother and my dad and they were some of the first civilians to be treated with it. This was in Aberdeen in 1946.

Much more recently, I found out that the doctor in question was Sir Ewan Forbes.

That sounds like a magnificent dream. I'd love to read Queen Charlotte's story too.
