Things I'd rather have than money.

My big adventure of the day was buying a vacuum cleaner.

No, really.

About a week ago I'd messaged someone on NextDoor about it, figuring it'd be easier to buy refurbished and carry it a few blocks than buy new and wait for delivery, and she accepted on the grounds of cash or cashier's check. Getting the cashier's check was simple enough - I'd written the person's name down and just held the phone up to the window for the bank clerk to type it instead of having to spell it, which was easier for everyone - and I was all set to deliver it, but I was waylaid by a cat. A cat out in broad daylight.

A poly-dactyl, black-and-white cat lazing around a parking garage entrance.

Just sitting out on the street, happy to press its face against my hands. I'd been out biking, folding errands together, so I put my helmet back on to have both hands free, the better to pet it.

The better to get scratched, twice. Once on each hand. Because the first time I didn't stop, and it came back for more time under my hands.

Well worth it, though, to have touched its warm fur for a while.

Getting the vacuum cleaner itself was easy. The woman I'd spoken to came down to get the check, and she said her partner - her exact words, her partner - would be down shortly with the equipment. Another old woman with short, silver hair. They'd moved into their apartment together in the 1970s, and my heart rose up to just be in their presence.

They were impressed I arranged everything, canister, attachments, and all, into my backpack, a tote bag, and my hands, and was ready and happy to carry it a few blocks. I took the praise happily, and I hope to use the vacuum before the year's out.

The small adventure of the day was buying a Cameo question from James Marsters and getting a response just a few hours later. Either he had enough time to easily get to it, or he liked the question enough to move it up in the queue. For whatever reason it happened - I'm absolutely delighted and still doing little happy dances.

Getting way laid by cats is always worth it
