A long time coming.
On March 14, I was supposed to go to a museum and eat cake with a friend.
Today, eighteen weeks later, we finally got to see each other. No cake, and no museum, but the friend was the important part, anyway.
We had lunch outdoors at a local Greek place, eating halloumi and drinking unsweetened frappes that reminded her of her long-ago vacations to Greece, enjoying the companionship and conversation. We've spent the last weeks chatting a few hours each Saturday; doing it in person means there's an ease for pauses and lulls to just look around, and let the mind wander, and more easily track trains of thought as they move and jump.
When we were done, we spent about three hours lying on a blanket in a nearby park, talking more, and getting in some good drinking. For a mixer, we used Trader Joe's sparkling strawberry juice. For the alcohol, I had peach bourbon, and she had vodka, and then gin. She recognized the distillery that produced the little six-pack of samplers I pulled out of my bag, and said they made a great apple vodka.
"You mean this one?" I said, pulling it out of the six-pack.
She said they also made a good applejack - "You mean this one?" I said, pulling off the same trick twice.
We lay a blanket down, and lay facedown on the grass, not even trying to get up. We walked through Riverside Park, enjoying the topiary and greenery and the buildings through the trees. We didn't hug good-bye, but we did begin thinking about possibly doing this again soon, even potentially me going out to her place right across the Hudson.
Hopefully sooner than eighteen weeks.
