Bound to get you.

Close to eighteen months ago, a ring slipped off my finger while I was putting a dress away. I didn't even hear it hit the floor. I knew it was somewhere in my closet - not even my apartment, my closet - but beyond that, it'd effectively disappeared. Like I said, it put me in the Borgesian situation of both having lost something and knowing exactly where it was.

Tonight, I picked out a nice dress I don't usually wear for a formal family dinner tonight. I pulled it out of the closet and flipped it around to put it on - and I finally hear the ring fall to the floor.

(Incidentally, the other ring I'd thought lost on my way to the laundry room had just slipped underneath my laptop, which I found out when I went to the bother of dusting.)

Funny I should read this today. I spent about an hour today trying to figure out where two of my credit cards had disappeared to. The plus is that I had used one in a store and knew it had to have disappeared between there and home, as I discovered it missing about an hour later before I left again. I went back to the store to ask for it but they had not seen it. I emptied out my purse, my pockets, a bag I had been carrying. Nothing. I'd looked on the floor of my car, but I went back out with my flashlight. And then I spotted it. I carry the two cards in a small leather business card holder which is black. It had slipped in between the seat and center console and was too dark to be seen.

How it came to end up there I've no idea. But I was very relieved because I'm traveling next week and replacement cards would never arrive in time.

That just happened to me with an earring! It had fallen into a pocket of my jewelry organizer. I was so eager to find it when I cleaned the floor of my closet, and then... I didn't. It turned up weeks later when I was looking for something else.

Bonus: closet has a very clean floor now.

Or ... that poor ring had been falling through time for 18 months and it finally landed. Or portals. :)
