Official capacity.
Today I was called on to be an official witness. It's not as exciting as it sounds: I signed a few documents which said I was present when other documents were explained to someone by someone else. Mostly items relating to wills and trusts. I did it partly as a favor, partly because I had the afternoon free, partly because I can now call myself an eyewitness because I witnessed it with my own eyes, and partly because I got a little money for my time.
Not a lot, all told, but more than I'd have gotten from sitting around my apartment doing nothing. As hourly rates go, being an official witness is one of the better gigs I've had. If it was more reliable, I'd wonder if I could make a career on it. As it is, I'll take the paycheck and treat myself to a latte.
