Dental hygeine as mechanism for unlocking wisdom.

Two nights ago, I found out I improperly scheduled my plane tickets to and from Detroit, and couldn't change them. If I wanted something different, I'd have to cancel and rebook the whole thing.

Instead of doing that in a fit of spite, I took a shower and went to bed. The next morning, as I brushed my teeth, I thought back on a conversation I'd had with a friend Saturday night and remembered: AirBnB is a thing that exists.

For a small percentage of the cost of the new plane ticket, I could rent an AirBnB location for a night, spent most of a day in Detroit, and then head off to the hotel. Then, I could cover the cost of the hotel room for another night, making the expenses come out to about equal what I'd pay for the rebooking while also vastly improving my overall quality of life.

I'm thinking of staying a night in Corktown and going to the Detroit Art Institute and the world-class used bookstore. Does anyone have any neighborhood, restaurant, or other visitation suggestions? Public transportation tips? No promises I'll have time to get to any of them, but it'd be nice to hear about the best little coffee places from people who've been there themselves.

not familiar with Detroit myself, but I passed along the request for info to a friend who lived there for years. I'll let you know what she has to say on the topic

The DIA is fun. Enjoy! I assume you're referring to John K King Books? I could spend the entire day in there easily. Everything else is superfluous. :D

If you're into vegetarian food, Seva is excellent.

It's not close to Corktown, but my favorite thing about Detroit is the penguinarium at the Zoo. If you're a zoo person, it is can't miss.

As I recall, public transportation in downtown is pretty unreliable. I'd get friendly with the Lyft app. All of the Lyft drivers that we used in Detroit said that Lyft treated them better than Uber.

What a great save!

I booked a flight to ConFab yesterday, then discovered I'd ALREADY bought the same tickets, so there must be something in the air. (I was able to cancel with no penalty because I discovered it quickly enough, whew.)

I applaud your repurposing! I may have to take a similar approach to some tickets I've booked for September - I'm supposed to run a race but I think I'm too injured to do it, so instead of canceling I may go anyway and just visit/tour.
