The phone rang, and like a chump, I answered.

The telemarketer said, "Hi, I'm calling on behalf of Family Home Security."

I immediately replied, "I don't have a family."

A moment of silence.

"Good bye," I said, and hung up.

During the call, I meant it in the connotation of "I live alone in an apartment with no children or significant others." After the call, I realized just how effective a conversation stopper it'd been - completely unintentionally.

Well, it's effective anyway!

I had one the other day that made the mistake of asking if it was convenient, and I proceeded to answer all their questions with 'no, it's not convenient', they haven't called back!
