A shame to waste this.
Last night I heard fireworks without being able to see them. They were launched about a mile away, and I could hear them through my open windows. On the roof, I couldn't see the fireworks themselves, just the smoke and the flashes of colored light. Knowing exactly what was happening and not being able to see it directly - there's probably a metaphor in there somewhere.
I also started a new fic. With my current original project still in the very early stages. It's currently stalled with me describing the story instead of telling it. I think I know what I need to do to fix that - step back, edit the current wordcount judiciously to make up for the research I haven't yet done, and then keep going. There's also the other project that's stuck in the red pen edit phase. That's going to take time and energy. A different kind of it, but still. And I want to. But the only impulses right now are for the comparatively immediate gratification of fanfic.
In part because I found yet another blind spot the fandom hasn't seen fit to explore yet, how come this keeps happening, how come nobody writes the very particular things I want to read except me.
Oh. Right. That whole thing about having a vastly different approach and paradigm being a valuable and useful tool in terms of contributing to the ongoing conversation. Something to remember.
