Just to say that I forgot my wallet in my apartment today, but I was still able to get my usual afternoon coffee. Because I go to the same local independent place near work every day, at about the same time, they know me - so when I said I'd forgotten my wallet, they gave me the coffee anyway, knowing I'll be in to pay for it tomorrow.

You can't get that kind of service at a Starbucks.

I feel really insecure when the staff at an eatery start to recognize me and remember my usual order. There are definitely upsides, though!

There was one time it happened at another place, and I didn't even have to specify "for here" when I walked in. Just, here's your regular Wednesday iced mocha in a tall beer glass.
