We lifted this house.
I don't remember why I took notice of the guy - if I'd been on the other side of the street I wouldn't have seen him at all. So I guess I was just in the right spot to do it, and was open to the chance. I was walking to the subway after work and passed by someone standing on the sidewalk, pulling at his shirt and staring at something there. I followed his line of sight and stopped along with him. Because he was pulling at a dragonfly.
A gorgeous, beautiful dragonfly, browns and yellows, iridescent and wings so delicate and fine I could see the stripes of his shirt through them. Close up, just by my face, closer than I've been to such a big insect in a good long while, and not even with it flying. Staying still, barely shifting as he pulled his shirt, unwilling to touch it or shoo it away. I can't blame him. If a dragonfly landed on me, I wouldn't be moving anytime soon.
You better believe I cooed at it.
You'd definitely believe I gently brushed my finger beneath its feet, getting it to climb onto me and leave the guy to the rest of his life.
My plan was to walk it to a nearby park two blocks away. After half a block it started flexing its abdomen and wings, and just as I got to the first corner, it took off. I guess it just needed a place to stay still for a while before it was ready to keep going.
