Music call.

In working on this Scrubs fic, I decided to title each chapter after an individual song.

Then I decided to only use songs that exist when the specific chapters takes place - so if it's a scene in 2003 then I can't use music from 2005. Because for all the science fiction in this fic, time travel isn't part of it.

And tonight I realize I don't have enough female singer-songwriters, or just female singers, to finish this up to my liking. Sure, I could repeat Aimee Mann and dig deep into the Ani DiFranco I've collected but haven't really listened to...but I'd like to cast my net out and ask people for recommendations of women's singing voices from the late 1990s and early 2000s. If anyone's got something.

Song about motherhood, too, would be great.

DAR WILLIAMS. You 1,000% need Dar Williams in there. She doesn't have motherhood songs, but she sings about a lot of things that aren't love, including one in which a bunch of old ladies chase a criminal through a cranberry bog because the men are taking too long and another called "The Pointless, Yet Poignant, Crisis Of A Co-Ed," which is so perfect I don't want to ruin anything about it for you.

Seconded! And actually she has a song about parenthood called "The One Who Knows" but I'm not sure if it fits your time slot. Might be later.

You could also look at performers who did Lilith Fair. All kinds of awesome singers there.

Some of my favorite womens' voices from the late '90s to the Oughts ...

1) k.d. lang
2) Jane Siberry
3) Laurie Anderson
4) Chrissie Hynde
5) Joni Mitchell
6) Annie Lennox

I don't know that any of them ever sang about motherhood, though.
