Really crappy book club aesthetics posting

I should have taken a few pictures of Caitlin Starling, I got her at the worst moment. Also, my cell phone could not handle the deep colors and it didn't focus in that one shot?
Oh well. Maybe someday I'll proper book club aesthetics post.
The event was fun! I barely got the book done in time. She talked about her upcoming vampire novel and also what the sequels to a few books would be like if her publisher greenlights them. Part of why I grabbed pics is because when I say 'it's a bar that's a converted house' people often seem confused by that idea. We have a decent number of bars like that here. Book club gets the second floor when we are there. IDK if this is just a Portland thing, but yeah, houses make good bars.
...I could have made like an actually really nice mood board if I'd used my real camera, but bringing that would have been a bit much
Not to be rude

What I recently finished reading:
The Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison, the third book in the Cemeteries of Amalo sub-series of The Goblin Emperor books. I had gone into it with mixed feelings; not that I strongly cared about
spoiler
the Thara Celehar/Iäna Pel-Thenhior ship, but I had heard that the way it was sunk was awkward and issueficcy and felt like "I was going to write this relationship in but it felt pointless after all the fanfiction", and - yeah, it wasAlien Clay by Adrian Tchaikovsky, stand-alone SF. Again, a lot of people whose reviews I follow didn't like it, but I did; Tchaikovsky is hit and miss for me, but this was a hit. A biologist who is also a political dissident on an extremely authoritarian Earth is exiled as prison labor on a planet with native life that is very weird and apparently hostile. This is basically another exploration of Tchaikovsky's Theme, which is at core, I think, "How can we see the Other as a Person? How do we overcome the instinct to be closed and tribal, and instead practice empathy, leading to discussion and exchange?" There are echos of the Children of Time series, in particular Children of Ruin (the second book), I think. There is also the strong contrast between a culture which gives lip service to the importance of individuality, but demands conformity, and a culture which emphasizes the communal and the good of the community. And of course, the importance of resistance, of holding to one's core beliefs even in the face of a terrible horrible authoritarian government.
I mostly enjoyed the style except for a few references which seemed a little too grounded in 21st century reality for this future in which humans are mining multiple far-flung planets. The structure and pacing worked well for me. Warning for a terrible horrible authoritarian government that doesn't give a shit about human lives other than their own, and body horror, and an ending which may strike some people as not entirely happy, but which satisfied me.

"Rapport: Friendship, Solidarity, Communion, Empathy" by Martha Wells, a Murderbot short story, in which Murderbot doesn't explicitly appear, but ART | Perihelion has recently met it for the first time. It's from Iris's point of view, on a mission with the rest of the crew, and really the mission is just a framing device McGuffin for "Peri has changed because it met someone?!?", and I agree with

What I'm reading now:
Just started on the seventh and last Shardlake book by CJ Sansom, Tombland.
What I recently finished watching:
Murderbot! I enjoyed it! I (mostly) appreciate, or at least understand, the changes they made in adaptation. (Not sure why it's not enough for Pin-Lee to be Space Lawyer, but also must be Badass Fighter? And the Arada/Pin-Lee/Ratthi thing didn't seem to have any reason for being and just felt a bit cringe.) I really loved the ending, and Gurathin's whole general arc, and SANCTUARY MOOOOON, and Mensah is chef's kiss perfect.
Speaking of Sanctuary Moon, Murderbot vidded it! Okay, it was really
What I'm watching now:
Arcane, because B watched the first episode during the winter, riding the stationary bike, and decided I might like to watch it with him, so moved on to something else so we could watch it together. Not very far into it yet.
What I recently listened to:
The third episode of S3 of The Strange Case of Starship Iris, which, I really liked this one!

Anyway! I dug out my potato masher and my citrus reamer with carafe for this, so it was nice to be able to use them. I do kind of wish I had a food mill but I've never been able to justify the expense to myself - I used a large fine mesh strainer and it worked fine.
In other news, I watched the most recent season of GBBO and I LOVED EVERYONE IN THE TENT, but especially Dylan! Nelly! Gill! and Georgie! ( spoilers, I guess ) And Allison is so great. I hope she sticks with the show for a long time.

Wildfire Days: A Woman, a Hotshot Crew, and the Burning American West, by Kelly Ramsey
Jul. 17th, 2025 02:40 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)

Kelly Ramsey became a hotshot - the so-called Special Forces of firefighting - with three strikes against her. She's a woman on an otherwise all-male crew, a small woman dealing with equipment much too big for her, and 36 years old when most of the men are in their early 20s. If that's not enough, it's 2020 - the start of the pandemic - and California is having a record fire year, with GIGAFIRES that burn more than ONE MILLION acres. At one point her own hometown burns down.
The memoir tells the story of her two seasons with the Rowdy River Hotshots, her relationship with her awful fiance (also a firefighter, on a different crew), her relationship with her alcoholic homeless father, and a general memoir of her life. I'd say about three-fifths of the book is about the hotshots, and two-fifths are her fiance/her father/her life up to that point.
You will be unsurprised to hear that I was WAY more interested in the hotshots than in her personal life. The fiance was loosely relevant to her time with the hotshots (he was jealous of both the male hotshots and of her job itself), and her alcoholic father and her history of impulsive sexual relationships was relevant to her personality, but you could have cut all of that by about 75% and still gotten the point.
All the firefighting material is really interesting, and Ramsey does an impressively good job of not only vividly depicting hotshot culture, but also differentiating 19 male firefighters. I had a good idea of what all of them were like and knew who she meant whenever she mentioned one, and that is not easy. You get a very good idea of both the technique and sheer physical effort it takes to fight fires, along with plenty of info on fire behavior and the history of fire in California. (She does not neglect either climate change or the indigenous use of fire.)
This feels like an incredibly honest book. Ramsey doesn't gloss over how gross and embarrassing things get when no one's bathed for weeks, you've been slogging through powdery ash the whole time, there's no toilets, and you're the only one who menstruates. She depicts not only the struggle of trying to keep up with a bunch of younger, stronger, macho guys, but how desperate she is to be accepted by them as one of the guys and how this causes problems when another woman joins the crew - a woman who openly points out that flawed men are welcomed while every mistake she makes is taken as a sign that women can't do the job.
I caught myself wishing that Ramsey hadn't had an affair with one of her crew mates as many readers will think "Yep, that's what happens when women get on crews," and then realizing that I hadn't thought that about the man who had the affair with her. Even I blamed Ramsey and not the equally culpable dude!
Ramsey reminded me at times of Amy Dunn's vicious description of the "cool girl" in Gone Girl, but to her credit, she's aware that this is a persona she adopted to please men and fill the void left by her alcoholic dad. Thankfully, there's a lot more to the book than that.

Challenge #5
Journaling prompt: Be a carnival barker for your favorite movie, book, or show! Write a post that showcases the best your chosen title has to offer and entices passersby to check it out.
This one isn't a favourite per se, but I did recently watch and enjoy it, it's Sherlock & Daughter.

Title: Sherlock & Daughter
Media: Television series
Approx length: 8 episodes, approx 8 hours
Where to find it: CW/HBO Max
What is it, in summary?: A young woman from the US named Amelia arrives at 221B claiming to be Sherlock Holmes' daughter. Holmes doubts this claim. At the same time Holmes is in a terrible bind, his dear friends Doctor Watson and Mrs Hudson have been kidnapped, and if he wants them to remain alive the kidnappers have said he is not to investigate any crimes. He takes Amelia on as his maid/assistant and she goes out into the world collecting clues and information so Holmes can make deductions and appear uninvolved.
What do you love about it?: First off I wanted to say if you are looking for a book accurate Sherlock Holmes adaptation this is not the show for you, I would instead suggest the Granada series which I talk about here. This show runs more on Holmes style vibes than anything else, plus this is supposed take place several years after the events of the books. It is also a very "CW" version of Sherlock Holmes, by which I mean there was a lot of focus on the young characters, in this case Amelia, who I did like, lots of drama and action. I'm probably not explaining it well, but if you've watched CW shows from the past you get their style and vibe.
Anyways, with all the caveats aside, I did enjoy this for what it was, and I found the overarching mystery interesting enough as they tried to figure out how Watson and Mrs Hudson's kidnapping was connected to other crimes. Also, the characters were likeable, I did like the actor who played Holmes, he's not my fave by any means, no one will probably ever top Brett for me, but I still enjoyed his take on Holmes.
As of right now, the CW has not renewed the show, however, I will say the main overarching storyline of the season is wrapped up by the end. There were a couple of minor plotlines left open for the possibility of a second season, but you can enjoy the one season as a complete story.
Content warnings: There is murder and violence, I say fairly typical of murder mysteries. There is a scene where a very minor character commits suicide.
Who do I ship?: Holmes/Watson. Watson is barely in the season and I still ship them! There are a few small moments throughout the season where you can tell that Holmes is thinking about Watson and they just tug at my heart. There is a scene at the end of the first episode where Holmes says to himself "My dear Watson, where are you?" then looks longingly at Watson's medical bag on his desk. Like come on! I tried to find a gif of it, but tumblr for once has failed me :( (if I find a gif after I will place it here).
There is also some fun tension between Holmes and a certain villain character that piqued my interest.

So in the fun time that is my life, remember how this new job fell in my lap around Christmas time and I moved over to it on February 11? And then also remember how a lot of unelected teenagers and crypto bros and so forth did a hatchet job on the entire federal government in the spring? Yeah so my new workplace lost millions of dollars in grants, and three people in areas other than mine have been laid off, and yesterday the big boss sat down with me and said he's just not sure they're going to keep having enough work for me to do, and another month from now when my probationary period is over he might not be able to keep me. This is a heads up, not a genuine notice, because it's conceivable they might find a way for it to work out - for one thing, I'm the only one who does what I do and they don't want to go back to having nobody do it. I proposed a couple of solutions, one being to bill most or all of my work to overhead rather than making people put me in as a line item in their project budgets as they're doing now, because the latter has them (a) putting me down for as little work as they can as they're suuuper carefully husbanding their resources and (b) not giving me work until the very end of their process, so I'm sitting around waiting a lot of the time, whereas if I were overhead I could work with people collaboratively and iteratively and not burn up their budgets, so I'd be busier and the products I work on would be better. (Seems like a slam dunk to me, but the overhead money has to come from somewhere, I guess, so maybe that's not as much of a solution as I think.) Another is to bust me back to 60%, which would free up two days a week and still pay more than I was making at my old job.
My old job, by the way, was not allowed to backfill my position - they made someone an offer, which she accepted, and then they had to pull it, and also cut a part-timer and one of two people in the other role they had two of, so they're down to bare bones and no matter what happens to or with this job I can't go back.
So that bites! I had a little cry about it and then activated the bat-signal (emailed my former grandboss and other references), updated my resume, googled some shit, and today I have applied for one (1) job. It's easier to get into a lifeboat from the deck of the ship than from the sea. Maybe I'll aim to apply for one job a week as long as I still have this one and bump it up if it gets where I need to. Also updated my LinkedIn, which I haven't actually even looked at in many many years, but I guess people are still using it?
UGH.

I might be a little burned out now. If my team reaches board 2 before I leave for my trip, then maybe I will feel like writing a couple more things, but if not, that's also fine. I've more than doubled my participation the other year I played, so!
- I continue to play Cult of the Lamb. It's so fricking cute. I've beat the main boss and am now indulging in the extras like sending my cute followers to the mating tent where they make eggs that hatch into more cute followers. My only complaint is that the music is extremely repetitive, just one samey jingle for the home base and another for combat.
- The Oasis tour has started, and I've been trying to avoid hearing too much about it, but I DID have friends sending me tons of photos and videos from the first couple of nights, and they hugged?? Noel CRIED????? They walked out together, and Liam took Noel's hand and lifted it like he was a prizefighter? Have I mentioned Noel CRIED.
The first gig was July 4, which meant I was getting all this at the same time I was trying to be social at a cookout.
Me on the outside: So you finished that degree? Congratulations!
Me on the inside: OH MY GODDDDDDD THEY HUGGGGGGED.
I peeked at the forum around that time, and everyone there was absolutely euphoric. Cannot WAIT to see it all for myself! SOON.

And once I get out of the shower, I have something like five or six more things that I have to get done online before I go to bed despite it already being after midnight. I'm going to have so much fun in a few hours when I need to get up early to take care of some things before work. 🙃
