Not quite painting the medium.

As [personal profile] petra requested, I'm putting the Cabin Pressure chatting we had up for public reading.

Hannah: I suddenly have the image of Arthur doing fairly well in picking up ASL.
Well, BSL.
Petra: mmmmmaybe?
I think he would get horribly mixed up.
like, someone would tell him the equivalent of the ASL "to meet" and "to fuck" and he would never after be able to keep it straight in his head.
Hannah: He'd keep trying and get to the equivalent of eighth-grade Spanish fluency, complete with profane and vulgar mix-ups, in a few months.
And he'd never get too far beyond that.
Petra: (they're one finger apart.)
yes, that.
Hannah: "You can talk when you're quiet! With your hands! With your entire body!"
Petra: Yes. I can see him thinking it was BRILLIANT
and then delivering the safety briefing as… utter chaos and mayhem with a reference to someone's aunt being a dick-sucking ogre.
Hannah: He keeps up with it because what if they have a deaf passenger and their interpreter's not here? He needs to ask these things.
And he always, always knows how to say 'sorry.'
Petra: yes.
He knows how to say, "Hello," "Sorry," and "Brilliant!" and those he never fucks up.
Hannah: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O53q8MlGAFk
It's relevant.
And how.
It's so a thing Arthur would do.
Petra: I. Yes. The ASL signs *are* Super Racist.
Hannah: Keep watching.
The relevant bit comes at the end.
Petra: Okay.
I'm reminded of how, um, special the ASL for Chinese is.
Hannah: I read a great anecdote in "Far From The Tree" about how a group of American Deaf people got to hear a lot of forbidden Chinese information from a group of Deaf Chinese because of the comparative lack of a language barrier and very little overhead concern of what they were saying.
Petra: oo.
That is very cool.
Hannah: It's a good book. Depressing and hopeful at turns, and very rich.
Petra: I <3 that there's a sign for "Fuck you. Fuck the lot of yez."
Hannah: That's the bit Arthur would get, yes.
Petra: he'd love it.
Hannah: He might *actually* know that one.
Petra: that is beautiful.
the plus side of standing up while chatting is you can do a little dance when things are that awesome.
Hannah: He'd know...at least four insult Douglas doesn't. Douglas knows they're insults. But he lets Arthur get away with the specifics. It lets him feel like he's getting away with something.
Petra: They might be insults.
They might be "resident of Birmingham."
Hannah: Do we know anything about Martin's siblings?
Other than that they exist?
Because if we don't, one of them could be Deaf.
Petra: Neither of them are Deaf. Though Arthur's uncle is. Sorta.
see: Helsinki.
(Not that anyone seems to use BSL with him.)
Hannah: AU where one of Martin's siblings is Deaf, who then teaches Arthur the basics.
"Martin, can I say you speak Sign if you're not using your mouth?"
"Yes." "Brilliant!"
Petra: Well. Martin would logically know some reasonable amount if he had a sib who used it.
So one wouldn't need the sib around for teaching.
Hannah: I'm watching, in fits and starts, a documentary on Netflix about a family debating whether to get a cochlear implant for their daughter.
And I'm thinking, wow, Martin could know this Deaf culture, would have grown up with it and just know the language and not really think anything of it, insult Douglas quietly...
Petra: It would be good for Martin to have secret ammunition against Douglas.
Beyond, "As long as you're happy, who gives a toss how many stripes you've got on your arm?"
Hannah: He has to scramble to come up with something polite for Douglas' name-sign.
Petra: since he privately thinks of him as Dick-las, for a good long time, yes.
Hannah: :)
I haven't yet felt any urge to read or write CP fic.
Petra: there is very little worth reading.
Hannah: Add disabilities and shake, and suddenly I'm interested.
Petra: Though someone did Martin/Tony Stark and that was *hysterical.*
Hannah: Small name big ego meets big name big ego.
Petra: Martin *did* want to grow up to be an aeroplane when he was a kid.
Hannah: "I always wanted to be a policeman - except for the summer I was six when I wanted to be Kermit the Frog."
"You'd have made a great muppet."
[]
Hannah: Whenever Martin quotes his Deaf relative, he signs it as well as speaking it, because...that's what they said.
Petra: <3333
