Be still.

Most of my stuff is in the dorm room, and I'll be sleeping in there tomorrow night. As a testament to how much space I think I'll have in the communal areas, I've rented a miniature fridge for several months starting this Saturday, through a local business for people in my sort of situation. I'm still keeping my good knife block in my room, though, and I might spring for a cheap electric kettle just to have tea on hand. Private showering is nice, but tea is a requirement.

It's my guess New York will seem more amenable when I've gotten past the first couple of weeks there, although I'm a bit amazed that the people living there already - not the long-term several-month residents, but anyone at all - hasn't thought to buy a drying rack when all the dishes get washed by hand. It seems like it should be a given to any living situation, like measuring spoons or light bulbs. Which is probably the cue for some platitude on adulthood that I'm just not seeing right now, but I'm sure it's there. Before I go looking for it, I'd better load up my current MetroCard. Also buy a new day planner, since writing things down is how I remember them.

We have an electric kettle at work and it is a wonderful thing. One small appliance I have really gotten a lot of use out of is an electric rice cooker. Haven't made anything except rice in it myself, but it's possible to cook entire meals with steamed fish, veggies, rice, eggs, etc. in one.

Having your own fridge is a good idea. It's amazing how communal fridges fill up so quickly, and there's no squabbling over who stole someone else's milk.

I'm used to cooking rice on the stovetop, since I don't make it enough to need a rice cooker most of the time - but I'll keep it in mind for the future.

Once again, I'm the only one who has any fresh vegetables in the fridge. Typical.
