Riverfront.

There's still ice on the Hudson this far south, and it'll hopefully stay a little while longer. I went to see it up close this afternoon, so whether it goes fast or slow, I'll know I went and saw it. I'm now sorry I didn't go see it earlier, because it was constantly astonishing to watch. To listen to, also: I'd figured it'd make sounds, but I hadn't thought they'd be so quiet and gentle. Waves of water, just more solid - as ice is to begin with.

It was delightful to see seagulls hanging out, standing around. When a boat dock stuck out into the water and created a barrier to catch some ice and get some buildup and almost get a bit of the river to stop moving, it was fascinating to stand and watch fluid dynamics in action and in inaction. Some of the pieces were substantial, at least the size of a card table, and would hook up on top of each other like scales, demonstrating how nature finds what works best and uses that for everything it can. I've lived here for nearly 15 years now, and winter remains fascinating and beautiful.

Next time I head out for a river walk like that, I'm bringing birdseed.

You know, your writing is so unique in its peaceful, descriptive style that I can recognize your posts as being by you, even when I scroll too fast past your name on my reading page.

Me (to myself): "Oh, wait - this post must be by [personal profile] hannah. Back up to the beginning."
