I'll tell you how.
Challenge #10
In your own space, talk about one of your fandom firsts. This could be your first fandom, your first fandom friend, the first fanwork you created, the first fanwork you interacted with... The options are endless! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
I can't remember the first time I made bread. It doesn't stick out too well in my memory, even though I know how it happened. I wrote it down in here somewhere, so I can go back and find the exact day instead of saying "sometime early in college" but I don't much feel like doing that. While I can't remember it with much precision, I know how it happened. I know all the steps I took and the instructions I followed, and I still have the loaf pans and measuring cups so I know what I used. I remember I baked the loaves in the kitchen of my childhood home, and what the stove and the tile counters looked like, too. I know what it must have smelled like, since it smells so close to what it's like when I make it now.
I remember that if I made it at that time in my life, I'd have been a lot more adrift in a fair number of ways. I'd have been trying to figure out how to get by without asking for help about a fair number of things, and without knowing how to ask for it, either. I know I continue to struggle towards certain goals and accomplishments, and I remember feeling more adrift about those goals back then.
The first time I made bread would've been when I was home for a while - maybe a vacation, maybe a weekend, maybe summer break. I could check, but I don't want to. I wouldn't have been wearing well-fitting clothes, and I would've known to follow the instructions so bread would happen. And I remember bread happening. The first time I made it, I made it well enough to enjoy without any caveats or hesitations, because I made a good loaf back then. I make a good loaf now, too. I remember feeling proud of myself and taking on the idea that I had this capability, and that I could carry it along with me.
I got the recipe from a friend of mine who's since passed, some years back. I remember her every time I make it, and the other people we both hung out with in our little corner of the internet. The first time I made bread, a friend told me how to do it. A friend I'd made in fandom. Someone I wouldn't have known if I hadn't started watching this one show and wanted to talk to people about it, and if she hadn't wanted to talk about it, there's no way our paths would've crossed. But we both did, and we found the same place, and we found each other.
What's fandom for, if not exactly that?
I knew her as Nightdog, and if you want to make what I call Nightdog's Never-Fail Whole Wheat Bread, then here's the recipe as she gave it to me.
Enjoy it, and think of the first time a friend gave you the same kind of gift.
