Updates.
This morning, the local car repair technicians ran their diagnostics and performed their tests to find out exactly how much had gone wrong and what, if anything, could be done to fix it. They found out what went wrong could be fixed, what was no longer working could be replaced, and determined how much it would cost. It ended up being in the mid four-digit range, rounding. As that's still less than the cost of a new car, it's being paid.
It'll be ready sometime late on Friday. It's a couple more days of being four miles from the nearest small town main street without a car, and it's not the end of the world.
