Scavenger hunt.

Challenge #6: In your own space, post the results of your fandom scavenger hunt. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. A favorite character & Something you find comforting & A piece of clothing you love: My long leather coat, an echo of Spike's that has a lovely weight and heft and works wonderfully as a windbreaker. I stand tall when I wear it, and its ability to swish around never fails to make me smile.

2. Something that makes you laugh & A bookshelf & Something you find comforting: My collections of Calvin and Hobbes comic strips.

3. A bookshelf & Something you find comforting & A thing from an old fandom: I have six white bookshelves in my apartment, three inherited, two stooped, one built to order. They hold poetry and prose, cookbooks and comic books and cultural anthropology, memoirs and songbooks, impulse purchases and treasured gifts, soft toys and ceramics and blown goose eggs, CDs and DVDs and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome on Laserdisc and The Rocky Horror Picture Show on VHS - the inaccessibility of the formats serves to enhance the camp aesthetic - and the remnants of my time in places I used to go to a long time ago, like the X-Men, and places I've been going to for a very long time, like Discworld. They're overstuffed and I could winnow them down and looking at them always makes me happy.

4. A game or hobby you enjoy & Something you find comforting: The small journal I use to keep track of my weightlifting exercises. I can see the progress I make and remember how long I've been doing this.

5. Something you find comforting & A bookshelf & A thing from an old fandom: Those Discworld books I mentioned are a perpetual source of comfort in Pratchett's ability to give me a searing sentence that shatters and sharpens my understanding of myself and humanity as a gift.

6. A TV show or movie you hope more people will watch & Something that makes you laugh & A thing from an old fandom & A thing from a new fandom: The Jackass: Ten Years of Stupid book still gives me a good ab workout. I loved it a long time ago, took a long time away from it, and it recently came roaring back, making me happy I never got rid of my DVD box set. It's puerile. It's juvenile. It's also, in all senses, painfully sincere, and that sincerity is a shining beacon of joy in a world that prides itself on detachment. It's humans with human bodies in ways that are hard to find among all the polished chests of Hollywood and magazines. I like to say that there aren't any rituals to touch the skin of other men, and if there were, they wouldn't be intricate. I like to say it's platonic BDSM. I like to say it makes me laugh, and there's some photos in that book that still get me howling.

7. A piece of clothing you love & Something you find comforting: I have several pajama sets that are deeply comfortable and comforting to sleep in.

8. A thing from an old fandom & Something you find comforting: I have a sixteen ounce Team Fortress 2 mug from ThinkGeek, back in the day, that makes a substantial cup of tea and holds heat well, and when I take it out of the back of the cabinet and make a cup of lapsang souchong, both the memory of the joys of that fandom and the drink itself raise my spirits and settle me down.

9. A thing from a new fandom & Something that makes you laugh & A bookshelf: The podcast Buffering the Vampire Slayer had the gimmick of every episode including at least one original song. As such, their merch included CDs issued every season - and, when they finished the show, a classy box set. Quite a few of those songs got me to laugh out loud, whether I was in a formal office atmosphere or alone in my apartment, and I thought the box set would look good on my bookshelves. I thought right.
