New joy.
Okay. So.
There's this band. This band's called Voxtrot. This isn't a band in the movies, this isn't a band they played much on the radio. This is a band I found from a fanmix from around 2006, back when they were downloadable ZIP files with custom made front and back covers. One song. "Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives." Knocked my socks off. That one song stayed fresh and new every time I heard it. It stayed rich and true. And for a long time it was all I knew of them. This one song.
One song leads to wanting to hear another one, and back in 2015, back in February of that year, I get it into my head to see how to do that. I find out there's two EPs and an album and a three-song single piece collection and a handful of tracks scattered around here and there, across a couple of online stores, a curious set of Youtube vinyl rips. Not much music from a fairly short career. It's almost a shame to have all of it; it's a glorious feeling to have heard everything. To be able to share all of Voxtrot. As much as I can, easier than ever before. These few songs.
These few songs had me thinking of them, checking out some other music by another long-disbanded band, wondering what was on offer at present. There's something I haven't seen before, a collection of the two EPs as one ten-song collection and another, different ten-song collection, a couple of tracks I haven't yet heard. Any chance of something new from Voxtrot is thrilling, exciting, almost too much to be believed. I grab it and put it on headphones and give it a play. It's still rich, it's still fresh, and for the first time in a long time, it's a Voxtrot song I haven't heard before. And as I do these days, I see what there is on Tumblr.
It's not just that the band's finally released a couple of old songs they didn't share before.
They released the songs because the band's back together.
It seems impossible but it's true.
Twelve years. Twelve long years apart, 2010-2022, it's back together, it's on tour, and I could cry tears of joy at the thought of it. I wasn't able to see them when they were first here, I can't get out to see them as they are now, but they're back, they're here again, and I might get a chance to see them someday - and even if I don't, even if I never hear them live, there's a joy in knowing they came back together for a little while.
Jackass, Voxtrot, getting in touch with old friends, returning to California for my birthday - 2022's been a good year for things coming back around.
