Hold onto these moments.
Last year on New Year's, I went out to the roof to watch midnight fireworks. A few people were up there already, strangers to me, friends having a good time in each other's company. They shared their drinks with me, and I took those drinks right from the bottles. We laughed, and I said something about random meetings marking the coming year, incidental encounters with new people, making friends where you find them.
This year it's a bottle of Martinelli's all to myself, in my apartment with the windows closed and fireworks happening that I can hear and can't see. There's no new company, but this year's best moments have been people reaching out to those around them - as far around as can be reached, in as many ways and means of reaching as can be, whether or not hands touch each other, that moment of connection has kept us all going.
That part, at least, I got right last New Year's.
Bring it, 2021.
