Blogging to remember.

Last week, a new friend came to town. A bunch of people took the excuse to see her, and long story short, I'm working on engaging on a couple of new networks. Long story longer, she let me tag along for some of the events and meetups, which included several parks, subway rides, fairly epic meals, and a lot of smiles and laughter.

We walked over the Brooklyn Bridge on a rainy, dismal day. After someone else complained about the weather, I said it was really nice - because if the weather was good, the bridge would be packed! But now we had the whole bridge to ourselves. Which they all understood, and began to thoroughly enjoy the circumstances.

We walked through Harlem and Morningside Park and through much of Washington Square Park and the Bowery, discussing fic and character points, going over architecture and urban infrastructure and botany. We stopped at the Hungarian Pastry Shop for fabulous strudel, and boggled over the sculptures across the street.

We also met up at a bar and went to a completely different, much quieter, place for dinner later. We talked ice cream flavors, metatextual aspects to casting live-action parts, sheep, stickers, and how everything in New York City used to be something else.

The outstanding highlights, the parts I most want to remember:

Someone - the third person in my life to tell me this - said I talk exactly like I write. That the Hannah I present is the Hannah that I am.

I'd been giving out books and small gifts to everyone, because first I was just giving them to my friend, then I thought better to not single her out, then I realized I had to give at least one to everyone. So when I found out someone was from Queens, I handed her a book on baseball parks, thinking she'd appreciate their place as urban infrastructure. It turns out her son works for Major League Baseball, of which I had no idea. Just a miraculous coincidence. Similar to giving someone else a book about two dogs running wild around Rome while they were working on a story about...people running wild around Rome.

Sitting next to someone I'd never met before, she asked me if I'd written anything in a particular fandom. I said I'd written one thing, and described a bit of it. And she'd read it. And she'd liked it. (It was Set Off Like Geese, for the record.) She said she could tell I'd written it from a place of experience and understanding, and that if fic award sites were still a thing, she'd have submitted it to that. I honestly can't remember all that much more she said, because I was flying too high on the thrill of having had someone liked what I've written.

Sadly, we all had to go our separate ways before any of us were satisfied with the time we'd had together. I hope what that means is we'll be doing it again.

That sounds really cool! It's always nice to meet new people that you click with.
